Saskatchewan Publishers Win Acclaim at 25th Annual Saskatchewan Book Awards
Regina, SK, May 1, 2018: The 25th Saskatchewan Book Awards took place in Regina on the evening of April 28, 2018, and Saskatchewan Publishers were well-feted at the event, in front of an audience of over 250 people that included such dignitaries as Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor Tom Molloy and the Honourable Gene Makowsky, Minister for Parks, Culture, and Sport. Four Saskatchewan publishers took home 11 of the 13 awards presented.
The University of Regina Press won the Jennifer Welsh Award for Scholarly Writing for Fiery Joe by Kathleen Carlisle, the Publishing Award for Claiming Anishinaabe by Lyn Gehl, the Publishing in Education Award for Speaking in Cod Tongues by Lenore Newman, and the Indigenous People’s Publishing Award for Aaniih/Gros Ventre Stories, compiled and edited by Terry Brockie and Andrew Cowell.
Regina’s Coteau Books also won several awards. Breathing at Dusk by Beth Goobie, published by Coteau Books, won the City of Saskatoon and Poetry Awards. Islands of Grass by Trevor Herriot, with photographs by Branimir Getvaj, was awarded the Non-Fiction and City of Regina Awards. Extended Families by Ven Begamudré was named the Book of the Year.
Saskatoon’s Thistledown Press won the Fiction Award with Glass Beads by Dawn Dumont, while Regina’s Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing won the Children’s Literature Award for When the Trees Crackle with Cold by Bernice Johnson-Laxdal and Miriam
The evening also saw a special presentation from SaskBooks. The organization recognized the commitment and achievement of publishers and individuals working in publishing who have made a significant contribution to Saskatchewan book publishing over five or more years, serving as an inspiration and model for others. Geoffry Ursell, Publisher Emeritus and co-founder of Coteau Books, received the inaugural Recognition of the Advancement of Book Publishing in Saskatchewan. The selection committee acknowledged Geoffrey’s Herculean accomplishments as a founder of many foundational organizations in the province, including Coteau Books, as a nurturer of many great talents in the literary arts, and as a visionary. SaskBooks and the Saskatchewan Book Awards will be recognizing Geoffrey in person at an event in Saskatoon this June.
